Hi guys!

Will you guys be participating in Double Cross? A few members from CPR are planning on building a robot for it, but there doesn't seem to be much information on it yet. Specifically, the exact dates are what I'm looking for. I've emailed a few different people and they haven't gotten back to me yet. If you guys have any information about it that you could pass on to us, that would be fantastic!

Thanks!

There are a few basic conditions that we ask for users that are a part of another team:
1) Gracious Professionalism. Please treat every team represented on these forums with respect. Do not belittle or denigrate other teams. Unprofessional behavior from any member teams will not be tolerated.
2) You must put your team name and number in your signature. This can be modified in the User CP, for which there's a link at the top of the screen. Otherwise, your account will be deleted shortly.
Use common sense, and you'll be fine. I'm sure with a community like that of FIRST, this will be no issue. If you have any questions or would like to talk to us individually, you can PM any user with a green username, for example Larry and web. Just a reminder, Monday Feb 14th (that might be today!) at 3:30pm and 6:30 pm we are holding webinars about some logistic issues you should be thinking about for coming to Seattle.

Rookie teams: You should definitely have someone(s) attend one of these. We can handle up to 1000 people, so multiples from each team are fine. We will try to record these as well.

Here are the topics:

Bag and Tag
Arrival / Departure times
Onsite food
Consent forms and team rosters
Hotel Reservations
Pit Areas

I cannot recommend enough that your team plan a trip (or 2 or 3) to your local practice field.

http://www.firstwa.org/FRC/PracticeField...fault.aspx

The practice field is typically constructed "per the field drawings" to provide you an arena to drive and perfect your mechanisms and strategies.

This is where you would go with all of your prospective "drive team" members, eg. the driver, co-driver, feeder/analyst, and coach. They will see firsthand the sightlines and perspectives from behind the plexiglass... it's a different world than the diagrams and having a feel for the arena is necessary for team success.

When you plan your trip, in addition to coordinating with the manager of the field (Lynnwood is closest to you), make your checklists of things to bring with you: tools, spare parts, batteries and chargers, laptops, cables... pretty much a "mini-pit" so that you can make repairs and adjustments as needed, on site.

Also check with the practice field manager if food & drink are allowed.

Good luck!

How are you guys doing?

At this point in the build process, a large portion, if not most or all of the prototyping, should be completed. With these prototypes, you should have an idea what your strategy is going to be. Defensive? Tube-scoring? Herding/transporting tubes? All of these are valid strategies, and it will come down to the areas you guys have had successes in prototyping.

No matter where you are in the design process, I sincerely urge you to take a look at the documents we have in our Build Documentation forums. It includes presentations, in depth papers, etc. from strong teams around the world as well as some common mechanisms found in FIRST. Particularly useful is the 148 Design Process, which we have two hard copies and many digital copies floating around in our club.

~~~~~~
So how are we doing?
As for us, in the first two days, we discussed our primary objective ("Get to St. Louis") and how we'd go about accomplishing it. Afterwards, we did a thorough examination of the game manual.
Next, we outlined every possible "what," or possible objective (e.g. "duh" ones like accelerate fast, score all 3 types of tubes as well as less obvious ones like move tubes from one peg to another, pass tube from feeder to alliance robot, etc.)
We generalized all of the objectives into 3 sections: offensive (tube-scoring), defensive (getting in the way), and minibot. A Venn-diagram of these three categories produced the 6 possible strategies, three of them pure and three of them hybrid.
From our massive list of "whats" (~40), we indicated the ones that were absolutely imperative for each strategies. After, there were "mid-priority" and "low-priority" objectives. For each tier on our prioritization, there were some 4 or 5 objectives; the other 25 or so weren't on the list.
Because we had difficulty deciding on a strategy to approach, we split the elements of the robot into subsystems.
-Chassis: get the basic chassis running for programming to start developing; afterwards, examine possibilities for defense (hard to push)
-Scoring mechanism: two subteams--arm and gripper--for prototyping. The burden of proof of concept was on this team. A sophisticated arm is obviously the critical component to the offensive strategy. If this cannot be done well, we must go defensive.
-Minibot: in each discussed design, a minibot has been high on the priorities simply because of its scoring value. A team is dedicated to minibot development and deployment mechanisms.
So far, we haven't decided on a strategy (the arm team has been relatively successful at convincing the team that the arm will be successful!). All three subsystems have been making progress.
~~~~~~
Other things:

1) Remember, you have a 30 lb WITHHOLDING ALLOWANCE.
2) How are other teams around the world doing in terms of minibots? The most reputed teams have been reporting climb times of around 3-4 seconds, while historically mediocre teams are at around 5-7 seconds. We're currently at just under 6 seconds.

Phew, kudos if you read all of that

Any thoughts or concerns?

This subforum is dedicated to Team 3663. Some basic information about the subforum:

-Under General forums (anything unrelated to 1899 specifically).
-Discussions not viewable by public
-Should the forums expand to include more teams, this subforum will only allow posting from moderators and members of 1899 and 3663.
-A forum tutorial can be found here.
-Please add your team name and/or number to your signature, which can be modified at the User Control Panel. Thanks!
-We don't have very strict rules; common sense should suffice

Good luck and enjoy!
